About Us
The term "HODL" originated from a typo in a Bitcoin forum post on Bitcointalk.org. On December 18, 2013, a user named GameKyuubi posted a thread titled "I AM HODLING" during a period of significant Bitcoin price volatility.
Frustrated with traders selling off their coins and intending to express his resolve to hold onto his Bitcoin despite the market crash, he accidentally mistyped "holding" as "hodling." In the post, he wrote:
"I typed that title twice because I knew it was wrong the first time. Still wrong. w/e. GF's out at a lesbian bar, BTC crashing WHY AM I HODLING? I'LL TELL YOU WHY. It's because I'm a bad trader and I KNOW I'M A BAD TRADER." The misspelling, combined with his drunken, defiant tone, struck a chord with the crypto community.
"HODL" quickly became a meme, symbolizing a strategy of holding onto cryptocurrency through market ups and downs rather than panic-selling. Over time, it evolved into a backronym—"Hold On for Dear Life"—though this was coined later to give it a more intentional meaning.
From that accidental post, "HODL" spread across forums, social media (later X), and crypto culture, becoming a rallying cry for long-term believers in Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. It’s now a cornerstone of the crypto lexicon, representing resilience and faith in the asset class’s future value.
